What to Expect From a Cleanse — the Side Effects of a Body Detox

A cleanse is a short-term diet used to clear toxins from the body. Most cleanses involve fasting while drinking lots of fluids to flush out toxins from the body. There are many reasons for wanting to do a body detox. Some people do an annual cleanse to prevent internal toxic build-up, others choose a cleanse to lose weight, and others find that cleansing is a good way to refresh their system so they detox the energy and rejuvenation.

If you’re considering doing a cleanse or body detox, there are some side effects and other things you should expect and be ready to experience. Like any diet, there are both positive side effects and negative side effects that need to be considered before starting a cleanse.

First, remember that you should always talk to your doctor before making the type of radical dietary changes required for a body detox, as some health conditions may be aggravated by a cleanse.

Negative Side Effects of a Cleanse

I like to end on a positive note, so we’ll start with the negative side effects first.

Headaches: When you begin to stop using certain chemicals and other substances your body is used to, such as caffeine and sugar, you may experience headaches during the first few days of the cleanse. This is because your body is technically going through withdrawals from these addictive substances.

Crankiness: When you stop giving your body what it?s used to, you may feel cranky or grouchy. Once your body adjusts to being cleansed, after about 4 days or so, your mood should start to change and you may even feel much happier and positive.

Lightheaded or dizziness: When cleansing, you are significantly reducing the amount of food to your body, therefore you may experience some lightheadedness or dizziness. Again, after your body adjusts, you should start feeling much better.

Insomnia: Usually when doing a cleanse, especially over an extended period of time, you tend to alter your schedule, therefore you may experience some insomnia. Nothing to be alarmed about and this too shall pass as soon as your body adjusts.

Very loose bowels: This is probably the most unpleasant of all the negative side effects, but it is your body?s way of ridding itself of those nasty toxins. Stay close to home when cleansing; read that book you?ve always wanted or learn a new skill on your home computer.

Positive Side Effects of a Cleanse

Now that we’ve covered the negative side effects of a cleanse, let?s go over the positive side effects that you can expect to experience from detoxing your body.

Weight loss: This may be the number one reason people choose to do a detoxification cleanse. Whether you do a full 10-day cleanse, like the Lemonade Cleanse, or a 24-hour cleanse once a week, you are likely to experience a weight loss of anywhere from a couple of pounds to 20 pounds or more. This is most likely due to the reduction of food you’re taking in and water weight.

Sense of well being: Detoxifying your body will give you an overall sensation of purification throughout your body; and because you?re ridding your body of nasty toxins that have built up over the years, you are more likely to feel more alert and focused, as well as more energized.
