Try Aromatherapy to Ease the Symptoms of Childhood Eczema

Childhood eczema is increasing and is becoming a common problem to school age children. It is estimated that around 20% of children are affected by eczema. This skin disease can take many forms and have long-lasting effect on a child’s health and self-image.

In its initial forms the skin is hot, itchy and dry while in more severe forms the skin becomes raw, broken and which also results in bleeding which looks very unpleasant. eczema can also cause discomfort and sleeplessness. Although it’s not infectious and cannot by spread to others just by touching, many times children with eczema are judged unfairly by their peers. So, not only are they burdened by disease, but they may be ostracized by other children.

Aromatherapy treatment can reduce the negative effects of eczema in children. Often the treatment of eczema with aromatherapy is done by applying essential oils on the child through massage. This has a dual effect. The aromatherapy oils have many benefits. There is also a healing power in massage, especially for children with eczema who may feel “different” or lonely.

The following essential oils should be safe to use on children over the age of eight years: German Chamomile, Thyme, spike, lavender, benzoin and Litsea cubeba.

It is advisable to consult with a professional aromatherapist to avoid any harm because these essential oils can cause harm to children if applied incorrectly. Essential oils should not be used on very small children. They should never be applied to babies.
