Would you be able to identify someone that is demonstrating stroke symptoms and requires immediate medical attention? Strokes deprive the victim’s brain of oxygen, so when a person is having a stroke time is of the essence! Yet, many people would not be able to quickly identify a stroke if it happened to someone they know.

Many may mistakenly think that there is only one type of stroke. In fact, there are at least three main types of strokes, which leads to the question: What types of strokes are there?

Before presenting the different types of strokes, it is important to define what a stroke is. A stroke is an immediate onset of complications that affect the brain’s blood vessels. Strokes come in many types, and these types have many causes.

3 Types of Stroke

Ischemic Stroke

Ischemic strokes are the most common. In fact, they account for about eighty percent of all strokes. Ischemic strokes are caused by blood clots that develop or end up in an artery that sends blood to the brain. The blood supply is essential in providing nutrients and oxygen to your brain cells. As the lack of oxygen progresses, brain cells lack the energy to work properly. Eventually this leads to cell death, and a terminal outcome of the stroke victim. Due to the stroke type, immediate emergency treatment is crucial if the stroke victim is to survive.

Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Intracerebral hemorrhages occur when an artery inside the brain suddenly ruptures. When this occurs, blood pours into the brain, which compresses the formations in the brain. With the onset of sudden pressure in the brain, cell damage can occur. The sudden onset of pressure can usually cause unconsciousness, or even death. The parts of the brain that are usually most affected by intracerebral hemorrhage are on the brain stem, cerebellum and basal ganglia. This pressure must be relieved as quickly as possible, and is also a life-threatening condition that requires immediate emergency medical care.

Subarchnoid Hemorrhage

Subarachnoid hemorrhages are another form of stroke that is induced by a sudden artery rupture. However, they differ in one way. Subarachnoid hemorrhages cause blood to fill the area just outside the brain, rather than intracerebral hemorrhages, that fill the inside of the brain. Because of this sudden feeling of blood in the subarachnoid space, intense headaches with vomiting and nausea often result. This stroke type also causes rapid unconsciousness, and eventually ending the life of the stroke victim.

It is quite apparent that all the above stroke types require immediate medical attention. There is a very short window of time in which to identify an individual is having a stroke and receiving the proper treatment based on the stroke types. Warning signs such as weakness of the arms, legs, or even in the face are the most common stroke symptoms displayed. Many individuals will suddenly become confused and unable to speak. They may seem out of it, or even strange. Sudden vision loss, severe headache, and trouble walking, are signs that something is very wrong. You should always call 911, if you feel that you are having these symptoms or see someone else with these stroke symptoms.

Let’s go over some of the causes of stroke.

The first, and most common type of stroke, is known as an ischemic stroke. The cause of ischemic strokes is the clotting of blood flow traveling towards the brain. This blood clot may form inside a small artery used to send blood to your brain, or it may move from other parts of your body and end up in the arterial system that flows to your brain.

Causes of Ischemic Stroke

When blood clots occur, they usually cause other complications that interrupt the regular blood flow around the body. They may be complications like: (...)

Read the rest of What causes a stroke?

Darbepoetin alfa, marketed as Aranesp and known as an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA), is often prescribed for diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease and mild anemia.

“The benefits we assumed we would have by treating anemia were less striking and the risks were more striking,” said lead researcher Dr. Marc A. Pfeffer, a professor of medicine in the cardiovascular division of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
