Find Heartburn Relief: Try an Acid Reflux Diet

Even before the “official” diagnosis, people that suffer from acid reflux disease have already learned to avoid certain foods. This is because diet has a huge effect of acid reflux symptoms.

acid reflux, also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), may exhibit an array of symptoms — pain, indigestion, burning of the throat and esophagus, bloating, gas and other more serious medical problems.

Making changes in your regular diet and starting an acid reflux diet can ease many of these symptoms. An acid reflux diet should include dietary modifications such as:

  1. Eat lean foods that are naturally low in fat.
  2. Increase your consumption of foods high in protein.
  3. Don’t eat large or heavy meals. Instead, enjoy light meals with several small snacks.
  4. Avoid the following foods and drinks:
  5. Coffee and tea, even decaffeinated. In fact, any drinks with caffeine can cause problems.
  6. Drinks with carbonation in them.
  7. Alcohol.
  8. Acidic fruit like tomatoes and oranges. This includes anything made from tomatoes such as pasta sauce or ketchup.
  9. Chocolate.
  10. Any kind of mints or peppermints.
  11. Spicy foods such as chili, salsa and Indian cuisine.
  12. Garlic and onion.

Changing your diet can make a big difference in the frequency and severity of acid reflux disease, but it’s not the only way to find relief. Lifestyle modifications used in combination with the acid reflux diet will help lessen the symptoms, too:

  1. Do not smoke or quit smoking now.
  2. Raise up your bed’s head about half a foot.
  3. Do not eat before sleeping or lying down.
  4. Make sure your clothes or belts are not tight on your body.
  5. If you are a little overweight, or are obese, losing weight will almost always provide noticeable relief. Start with the acid reflux diet and add in exercise.

For many people, following an acid reflux diet will provide more days and nights without the painful problems caused by acid reflux. However, if the symptoms persist or worsen contact your doctor immediately as these may symptoms of more serious disorders.
