Diabetes Diet: How to Eat for Health

For many suffering from diabetes, the diabetes diet remains one of the most difficult aspects of diabetes to manage. There are many complexities involved and the role of diet in controlling diabetes is vital.

There is no one diabetic diet for all patients with diabetes. There are foods, however, that are recommended to be part of a diabetes diet used to control blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates must be monitored judiciously within a diabetes diet. This is due to the fact that carbohydrates directly impact blood glucose levels to a greater degree than fats and proteins.

The Basic Diabetic Diet

A simple way to remember the basics of a diabetes diet is to remember ABC. The A represents A1C, a test that measures blood sugar averages over the three prior months. B is Blood pressure. C is for Cholesterol. Naturally, the goal is for people with diabetes to have normal blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

A helpful tool to use in determining the types of foods to eat is called the glycemic index. The higher the glycemic index, the more of an impact this food will have on their glucose level. Conversely, the lower the glycemic index food has, the less of an impact this food will have on the overall glucose level.

Those that eat foods that are high glycemic index foods will usually have higher body fat levels. The way in which this is measured is by the body mass index or BMI. This is why it so important to understand the glycemic index of the foods that you eat.

The interesting thing about the glycemic load as it relates to the diabetes diet is that it considers the effects of the amounts of carbohydrates in your meals.Remember, carbohydrates directly affect your glucose levels.

Many of those afflicted with diabetes do not realize the impact that carbohydrates have on their blood sugar levels. Instead, as part of a diabetes diet, they concentrate on foods and drinks that are high in sugar.

What to Eat on the Diabetic Diet

The proper way to eat on a diabetic diet is to try to eat a wide variety of foods everyday. This includes nuts, fruits, meats, vegetables, and dairy products. Also, whole-grain foods that are high in fiber can also help control blood sugar as part of a diabetes diet. Studies have demonstrated that those that used high-fiber diets benefited in a reduction of blood glucose levels in both diabetes type I and type II.

As you can probably already guess, serving size or portion control is also a part of any diabetes diet. Remember the larger the portion, the more calories that will be consumed. The extra calories will result in changes in your blood sugar.

It is also important not to skip meals and to try to eat at regular scheduled intervals. This includes snacks that are low in calories.
